Episode Five: GM Screens

This episode is about our favorite piece of GMing equipment: The GM Screen. Not everyone likes them, and we understand that, but we really like them. We detail what it is we like in a GM screen, what we don’t, and we discuss how to make your own GM Screen.

We’re sure you’ll want to tell us your feelings about GM Screens. Please email us, post on the Forums, “like” us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.

Here’s Episode 2-5, we hope you enjoy!

Remnants couldn’t be played because of the holiday, but a few of our group got together to play some Battletech; but Remnants continues to be bad ass. Stay tuned for Dresden updates, since it was played after we recorded.

OMG! I am soooooooooooooo sorry Nicky! I forgot all about it. It is with the stuff for the Psion campaigns second part which we wisely discarded. I do know where it is and I will get it in the mail soon. As always love the episode.

  2. 🙂 No worries Dude, thanks for not trashing it.

  3. Joe says:

Re: GM screens being 4 panels, I think it gives DM/STs more flexibility to keep books behind the screen. We always used two binders to screen, and used the DM screen itself as a notecard.

Though I enjoy gaming screens I mainly use them as a rules reference, not to hide dice rolls or documents behind. Not that I wouldn’t want to but I find that the screen really gets in the way and always end up putting it down.
I own the recent, awesome, “hardcover”, 3-panel, landscape format screen for Call of Cthulhu but I haven’t tried using it at the table yet. Maybe the screen won’t get in the way as much because of the landscape format.
Most older screens were a bit flimsy and made of poor material, especially considering their purpose, and also weren’t all that nice to look at. I really like the new trend of sturdy, durable “hardcover” screens with nice artwork, even though they’re a bit more expensive.

By the way, for “alien conspiracy”-themed games Conspiracy X 2.0 is the way to go. It mixes effortlessly with All Flesh and (for Joe) Terra Primate and a very cool aliens sourcebook was recently released for it.

I have heard of ConX and I think I should get myself a copy. I am a total sucker for conspiracy stuff.

I have yet to try our a landscape screen, but they look awesome! Cthulhutech has one, and I do enjoy that game.

By the way, the core dice mechanic in Atomic Highway, a neat post-apocalyptic game from Radioactive Ape Productions, has the same way of bumping up results in a dice pool roll. It is indeed a fun mechanic. The pdf of the corebook of this game is available for free from DriveThruRPG. I wonder if the authors are familiar with eachother’s work.
I know Ganesha games from “Familiars”, a charming little game where you get to play magical pets.

I have actually read Familiars, but it was along while ago. I know Ganesha primarily from its excellent miniatures war games.

  7. If you’re looking into Mage: the Awakening, check out the DaveB Actual Plays on rpg.net. They’re all things awesome about NMage, condensed into one game, with awesome GM, who ended up Freelancing for WW on the Mage line in the last few years.

Otherwise, play Awakening. It’s made of win.
And keep on being awesome podcasters

    • Joe says:

Thanks for the suggestion. I once tried a game of Mage, but the ST gave up a session or two in, and I haven’t found my groove to run it. That thread will give me a great look at how others ru nit.

      • DaveB’s Actual Plays tend to be the bible of How To Run a Kickass Mage: the Awakening game. I’m in the middle of my own campaign and I’m constantly challenged to try and bring it to DaveB’s level.

  8. Hey guys,
